Teen Mom OG Star Charged With Domestic Violence

October 3, 2019 Criminal Law and Procedure

Amber Portwood is charged with domestic violence against her then boyfriend, Andrew Glennon. On July 5th, 2019 Portwood was arrested on domestic abuse charges after a fight arose over traffic on the way to see fireworks. The couple returned to their Indiana residence and Portwood allegedly hit Glennon with a shoe for not planning the holiday better.

Glennon left to defuse the situation, but returned home to a charging Portwood. He claims he witnessed her take multiple klonopin, a benzodiazepine, shortly before attacking him. Glennon locked himself and the couples one year old son, James, in a bedroom. Portwood allegedly retrieved a machete and swung at the door with the weapon. She also kicked on the door while Glennon texted 911 for assistance. He stated he feared for his son’s life as well as his own.

Portwood admitted to hitting Glennon with a shoe, but adamantly denies taking too many klonopin and attacking him with a machete.

The Teen Mom OG star has been charged with domestic battery, a felony count of domestic battery, and a felony count of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.

The Evidence

There is a July 5th audio of the alleged assault. In addition, there is an audio recording of a car ride July 4th, three separate Ring videos and multiple photographs. It is unclear what the photographs entail. In one recording Portwood is allegedly heard hitting Glennon while he holds their son. Glennon requests Portwood to stop hitting and kicking him while he is holding James. Portwood is heard stating, “I will kill you,” and “I’m going to stab you…”

Custody Battle

Glennon is petitioning for sole legal and physical custody of James. Portwood has been allotted weekly supervised visits. Glennon claims Portwood is a risk to their son as she is non-compliant with her psychotropic medication. He wants to relocate James to California where he is originally from. Portwood suffers from Bipolar Disorder and Border-Line Personality Disorder. Glennon has a no contact order in place against his ex-girlfriend.

ArborYpsi Law Takeaways

The evidence against Portwood is extensive. However, it is imperative to remember that she suffers from two mental health disorders. While this may not technically justify her alleged actions it can be used in her defense, and could certainly be a mitigating circumstance. For example, not taking her medication could have attributed to her behavior. Remember there must be a presumption of innocence prior to a conviction. Let us hope that she receives the psychiatric help that she needs and both parties can come to an amicable decision regarding the custody of their child.
