Walmart Changes Gun Sales Policies Following Mass Shootings

September 5, 2019 Criminal Law and Procedure

Walmart and Sam’s Club will no longer be selling military ammunition, hand gun ammunition and will no longer sell hand guns in Alaska. Also the retail giant is asking customers to no longer open carry their weapons while in the store. This is in response to the recent Walmart shootings, employee protests in California, and a petition that acquired 142,000 signatures.

Before the self-imposed ban ,Walmart and Sam’s Club accounted for twenty percent of the assault-style ammunition market. Their chief executive, Doug McMillion, states that the chain needs to make some meaningful changes. McMillion is taking steps to prevent Walmart mass shootings from reoccurring. There have been 24 casualties in Walmart shootings this summer alone, one in El Paso, Texas, and the other in Southaven, Mississippi. McMillion, who is a hunter himself, states the stores will focus on selling hunting shotguns and ammunition for hunting and/or sports shooting. McMillion is also personally writing to the white house to take, “common sense measures.” He is requesting they pass laws that perform thorough background checks on individuals before they purchase a gun.

What other changes has Walmart made?

A few years ago the retail giant stopped selling assault-style rifles, but continued to sell the ammunition. In 1993 the store stopped selling hand guns in all states except Alaska. In 2018 the chain raised the age to buy guns from 18 years old to 21 years old.

What other stores have made gun reform changes?

Target, Starbucks, Kroger, and Chipotle do not allow gun owners to open carry in their stores. In addition, Dicks Sporting Goods no longer sells assault-style weapons or bump stocks. Dick’s, like Walmart, will only sell guns and ammunition to those 21 years old and older. Dick’s gun reform resulted from the Parkland Florida High School shooting. The shooter had purchased his shotgun from one of the sporting goods stores.

ArborYpsi Law Takeaways

Unfortunately, our country is in a mass shooting crisis. It is now at least a monthly, if not weekly occurrence. The mass shootings whether they be at a school, work place, store or airport is becoming part of our norm. Changes from big stores like Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods are needed and necessary in order to keep all Americans safe. It is reassuring that the chains where some of the shooters obtain their weapons are responding in a responsible manner. However, all American citizens have the right to bear arms. Any gun owner should always purchase their weapon legally, have the proper permits to own the gun, and store and transport the weapon safely at all times.
