Will An Expungement Help Me Get a Concealed Pistol License (CPL)?

Do you have an old conviction that’s holding you back from getting your concealed pistol license? Many criminal convictions will prevent you from getting a CPL, described more below.

If you do then it’s time for an expungement. An expungement is the legal process to make it as if the conviction did not happen.

Why Do Criminal Convictions Prevent You from Getting a CPL?

All felonies will prevent you from getting a concealed weapons license. The only way to get a CPL when you have been convicted of a felony is to get that felony expunged. A gun rights restoration case call allow to possess a firearm if you are a felon but not help you get a CPL.

Most misdemeanors will result in the loss of your CPL for a number of years. There are two types of misdemeanors that will do this. Less serious misdemeanors will result in a 3 year CPL suspension. More serious misdemeanors will result in an 8 year suspension.

The 8 years suspension could be cut short with an expungement. An expungement can be sought after 5 years from the end of probation or a jail term. This means there may be a 1 – 3 year period during which you are eligible for an expungement but unable to get a CPL without the expungement.

Take advantage of an expungement to get your CPL back sooner than waiting it out. Plus an expungement has the added benefit of having a clean or cleaner record.

What Can You Expunge?

The law allows you to expunge either one felony or two misdemeanors. However, you can’t have any additional convictions in order to expunge either of those two categories of offenses.

You Cannot Expunge All Criminal Convictions

You cannot expunge traffic offenses. This includes any type of conviction for an operating while intoxicated (DUI) crime. Most sex crime related convictions are not eligible for an expungement. Consult with a lawyer for a complete list.
