There are 8 Different Felony Classes in Michigan

In the state of Michigan, felonies are separated into eight different classes.

  • Class A Felonies - Punishable for any number of years in prison, including a life sentence. Examples include first or second-degree murder, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to steal or rob and criminal sexual conduct in the first degree.
  • Class B Felonies - Punishable by up to 20 years. Examples include second-degree arson, production of sexually abusive child materials, such as child pornography, and second-degree child abuse.
  • Class C Felonies - Punishable by up to 15 years. Examples include manslaughter, robbery or human trafficking that brings injury to another person.
  • Class D Felonies - Punishable by up to 10 years. Examples include larceny or embezzlement for properties valued at more than $20,000 and human trafficking.
  • Class E Felonies - Punishable by up to 5 years. Examples include first degree retail fraud, carrying a firearm or weapon with unlawful intent and home invasion in the third degree.
  • Class F Felonies - Punishable by up to 4 years. Examples include manufacturing, delivering or possessing with intent to distribute 5 kilograms or less of marijuana and unauthorized credit and loan applications.
  • Class G Felonies - Punishable by up to 2 years. Examples include drawing on insufficient checking account funds for amounts greater than $500, domestic assault and lobbyists giving gifts.
  • Class H Felonies - Punishable by jail time or other alternatives, such as electronic monitoring, treatment or probation. Examples of this type of felony include false representation to obtain or misuse someone’s personal information and using a stolen state ID card to commit a felony crime.

All felonies are subject to court-imposed fines, which are determined based on the specific crime and related circumstances. Ann Arbor felony attorneys can review your specific case and offer more insight into the charges you are facing.

Statute of Limitations in Michigan Criminal Cases

Ann Arbor felony lawyers know the importance of the criminal statute of limitations. Under Michigan law, criminal prosecution must begin within a specified time after the crime is committed, which prohibits the courts from filing charges if this time has expired. While these limitations vary, it is important to note that some crimes do not expire, such as murder.

★★★★★
Sam was a helpful lawyer who is a man of his word. He helped in our cases 2 times in a row with successful outcomes. I could not think of a better lawyer who is always on time to court, good attitude, smart, and honest. He is respectful and answers all of the questions we had. Two cases were both a success thanks to Sam Gigi
★★★★★
It has been a couple of days since Sam represented my son in Washtenaw County. He gave me the miracle I prayed for. He did way more than I thought was possible and as I told him on the phone I would hug him if I could. If you ever need a good lawyer, this guy is the one to hire – and his prices are very very reasonable. I wish him much prosperity and a good life. He made my life happy for the first time in a long time and I cannot thank him enough. Linda
★★★★★
Sam took my call and consulted me immediately. He provided fair pricing for the legal services I was requiring. I hired him about a week before my case, he still took on the case load and did amazing work. He is an excellent attorney and a friendly person to be in the court room with when you’re in a stressful situation. Devon
